What does having a college degree mean when looking for a job?

Some employers have come to expect that students fresh out of college are completely prepared for their new position without any training. After all they already have a college education. Unfortunately degrees usually give a good foundation but not the experience gained when actually working at a position. Especially with the abundance of the workers in the field some employers have even begun requiring degrees without regard to what the degree in as long as it was completed.
